Edwin Zheng was honored as Irondequoit High School’s “Outstanding Senior” on May 14 at the 31st Annual Dr. Michael C. O’Laughlin Outstanding Senior Recognition Dinner! One standout senior from each high school in the Monroe County Council of School Superintendents is chosen based on their scholarship, leadership, service and character. Edwin was joined at the dinner by our Superintendent, Aaron Johnson, Edwin’s father, Ming Hua Zheng and his cousin, Nicky Ni.

Edwin’s next stop is MIT, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering! A 99-average student, he has taken AP Statistics, Calculus BC, AP Physics C, Architectural Engineering, Principles of Engineering and Design, Drawing and Production at IHS. He was part of the ACE Mentorship program for three years, earning a $2,000 scholarship, and helped design, build and donate a mini-golf course to Camp Good Days & Special Times. Among his many honors and activities are Model UN Outstanding Delegate, Rochester Junior of the Year Finalist, Most Improved in Cross Country and NYS Youth Humanitarian Award.

His knowledge also has helped move our district forward. Edwin is President of the “Green Team” and wrote and presented to our Board of Education a $1.2 million proposal to implement a solar energy initiative. He also served as a student liaison on West Irondequoit CSD’s interview team for a new Energy Performance Contract that will create efficiencies across our district for years to come.

In addition to working at the family business, Jin Wang Chinese Restaurant, Edwin interned last summer with Bank of America. He interned in 2024 at RIT as a Volunteer Research Assistant.

The O’Laughlin program is the only that recognizes excellence in all County and City high schools at one event. Honorees receive gifts from Monroe One BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Cathy Hauber, Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Tom Putnam and their respective school superintendents.
